Sharp curve ahead...There has been a lot going on around the Lyon household since the last time that I've posted. Three children have graduated from high school, two children served LDS missions, one child is married, and then there's J-man. He is definitely the one that has made this journey very interesting.

J-man is now seven years old and is in second grade. He is a very tall and stocky boy. He's full of energy, laughter, love, and aggression. Yes, aggression. Most people don't believe that this sweet boy can turn into a violent child. The aggression is taken out on mom and dad mainly, with some of it directed at his siblings. We have been taking Joseph to various doctors for the past three and a half years. He has been diagnosed with multiple mental disorders. Everything from ADHD (Yes, he definitely has that!!), to Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), anxiety, and the most recent...high functioning autism. Out of all of these diagnoses, there are only two that involves multiple people compiling data to support the diagnosis-ADHD and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).

The road to get J-man to his most recent diagnosis has been rough. Sadly, it took having him admitted to an in-patient facility for 9 days, and being a part of day treatment for the past five weeks. We are driving an hour each way (with good traffic) in order to get him the help that he needs. I would love to say that we are seeing major improvements, but we're not. We are still having "rages" where he will come charging at us in order to hit, pinch, shove, scratch, kick, bite, and punch us. You might be thinking "why can't you just move out of his path?". Well, there is no successful way to avoid this. Once he becomes enraged, he will do everything that he can in order to cause us pain. We have even tried to lock ourselves into the bathroom, in which he then shattered a pumpkin pie in a glass pie plate.

Again, J-man is a very sweet and loving boy, and it breaks my heart to see him become so aggressive. I worry about his future. I worry about our future. This journey has been a lonely one. Michael and I have become very good at pasting a smile on our face and pretending that all is well, when in reality our stomach is in knots as we're worrying when the next eruption will happen. While J-man was admitted into the Neuropsychiatric Institute, we were worried about him and tried to not get too used to the idea of being "safe" in our own home. Church was very difficult to attend. We chose to not go the first Sunday, and I had a responsibility the next Sunday, so we went. It was the same week that the children sang Christmas songs. I think I cried during the whole program. It was a mixed blessing that I only had a couple of people ask about Joseph/us (there were only a few people that we had told about our situation). I was an emotional wreck. I cried during most of the lesson that I taught. I was hurting. My baby boy was in a psychiatric hospital. I needed to know that everything was going to be ok, that it's not our fault, that we're doing the best that we can, and that we have a support system. That is definitely something that I've learned over the past few years...we can not do this on our own.

We still have many curves on the road ahead of us. We are hoping that with this newest diagnosis, we will truly be able to make some progress. The ultimate goal is for all of us to feel safe and loved.

Where has the time gone? I had a huge list of things that I was going to do right after we moved back...and the list is still very long! A lot of these activities involve going as a family. It is still hard to believe that I now have to work around a college student's, a high school student's, a middle schooler, a toddler, and a "world" traveling husband's schedule! The days of being bored, because there is "nothing going on", has definitely come to a crashing halt!

I would not trade any of this away (all except for the temper tantrums that are thrown...yes, some are by me!). Life is too short! I am learning to find all of the wonderful blessings that are in my life daily!Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02682945109291353425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1153046275000475220.post-31004494031714981222011-01-27T15:39:00.001-06:002011-01-27T15:40:57.902-06:00Believe everything happens for a reason..."No Left Turns- Life is to short to wake up with regrets so love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it and if it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it most likely would be worth it. Enjoy life now - It has an expiration date." Michael Gartner.

I found this quote today on a friend's status update on Facebook. For some reason, it has really made me think today (this was going to be a non-thinking day!)! I am a firm believer that everything does happen for a reason! Every move that I have ever made in my life (and I have moved a lot!), I can look back and see that we were in that place for a reason, and then I can see how things started to change before we've left. I think it is amazing how Heavenly Father helps to prepare us for these changes.

I look at all of the friends that I have made as we've moved across the country and back, and I have some amazing friends! There are some that I have lost contact with, for various reasons, and I regret that we haven't stayed in touch. Maybe when the time is right, things will change. The one part about this quote above that is difficult for me, is the "forget about the ones (friends) who don't (treat you right)". That is easier said than done!

I am working really hard on following my motto for this year: "Come what may, and LOVE it"! So, I'm sure that I will continue to have changes and obstacles, but as long as I handle them properly, everything will work out!

Everything is wonderful here. Natosha is auditioning at USU for a position in the Aggie Marching Band in February. Zachary now has a UT learners permit, so now we need to get him out on the road (watch out EM friends!) to practice. Kaitlyn has just been advanced to Symphonic band at the middle school, and she is so excited about this-and so are we! Joseph is finally going to sleep on his own-without being rocked!!Yay! Of course, he is full of mischievousness, and he keeps me on my toes! I can't believe he is almost 2!!Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02682945109291353425noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1153046275000475220.post-9960894354331094092011-01-05T12:34:00.000-06:002011-01-05T12:34:21.725-06:00Random Thoughts from the Zoo: Cinch! by Cynthia Sass - A review and giveawayI am so excited to try this new diet! I am ready to get a "jump start" on losing the few pounds that I have recently acquired. Check out this blog from a friend of mine! She is giving away a copy of this book!
I am even trying to learn to be thankful for the trials that I have had in my life!! I am so thankful for the knowledge that the scriptures give us about how our Heavenly Father is mindful of us, and that He won't give us anymore than we can handle!

I am super excited about this Thanksgiving! We will be having most of Mike's family here, plus my "little" brother and his sweet wife! The last time that I've had Thanksgiving with any member of my family was twenty years ago. I am saddened to think that it has truly been this long since I have celebrated a holiday with a member of my family. I just hope that this will be the first of many times that my brother and I will get together!!

I would love to say that our lives have slowed down now that marching band season is over...but, I'm afraid that we are all still very busy! I loved being able to watch Tosha and Zac perform with the Westlake band. It was a sad night, a couple of weeks ago, when I realized that this performance was Natosha's last as a high school marching band student! On this same day, though, we found out that Natosha had been accepted to USU!! Yay!! My little girl is growing up (sniff, sniff)!

I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that you will take the time to see all of the wonderful blessings that you have in your life!
A lot of these reflections have come as I've been counting to 10 in order to calm down!! Joseph has hit the terrible two's, 5 months too early! He is really good at throwing temper tantrums, and I have a fat lip to prove it!

I have four beautiful children, and an amazingly supportive husband! This week, I finally received an e-mail from my mother, after having no communication with her for over two years. I am hoping that this e-mail will spur more interaction between the two of us. I have a great father that I am learning more about all of the time! I also have four sisters and two brothers, that I am trying to develop better relationships with! Not to mention, my "second family", that has been great to be a part of for almost 20 years!

Some of these sweet people I have known since high school. Thanks to modern technology, I have been able to reconnect with them, and to learn what is happening in their lives. There are some friends that I have, regardless of the distance, that I know are there for me any time, and that they care about me (and I care about them!).

I'm also thankful to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I know that this gospel is true, and that no matter where we live, the same principles are being taught. It is also great to be a part of a ward family!

I went totally domestic and made applesauce!! I had seen it done before by my friend Mary Anne, but I had never been brave enough to try! So, I had a lot of apples that needed to have something done with them, and I decided to see what kind of a mess I could make!! I think that I had 24 apples and it made 3 1/2 pints of applesauce! It wasn't hard to make at all! The worst part was the peeling and seeding of the apples! I think I am going to check and see if I can get more apples and jars and make another batch or two! It tastes so delicious (if I do say so myself!!)!!

Now, what can I do with 6 large oranges????Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02682945109291353425noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1153046275000475220.post-70562265542528501852010-10-12T10:54:00.000-05:002010-10-12T10:54:30.755-05:00AutumnI love the changing of the seasons!! We have had a really long summer, so it is exciting to have the temperatures cool off and to feel the "crispness' in the air! It is also helping me to realize that our wardrobe from Mississippi is not going to make it for the Utah winters! Mike and I still have a lot of sweaters and sweatshirts, but the kids have mostly short-sleeved t-shirts! Time to go shopping!! =)

I think I finally have the house mostly unpacked. There are still a few boxes that need to have the contents find a home, but we are mostly there! I am super excited! I was about to think that it was never going to happen!! Now, I just need to clean walls, hang pictures, reorganize my kitchen, plus everything else that normally has to be accomplished! I might get a day off by 2011! Haha! I love staying busy!

I was super excited to see a couple of my "Mississippi" friends on Friday. We went to Cafe Rio (which is yummy!!), and had a great visit!! One of my friends lives in West Jordan, but my other friend still lives in the Brandon, MS, area. It was so much fun! Hopefully, we will be able to do this again!

Okay, so here are a few more pictures that have been taken over the year.

Things have definitely changed since the last time that I updated the "Chronicles"!! We are now living in Eagle Mountain, Utah! We moved out here in September.

It is amazing how Heavenly Father works! Mike and I have both known for a while that we were going to be moving from Mississippi, but we had no idea where we would wind up. Utah was not a place that we had even considered. I had even accepted that we might be moving back to Wisconsin (the winters are too brutal for me!!)! When our family headed west for a family reunion in June, Mike and I both felt like we were supposed to move back to Utah. I hadn't felt that way for over 8 years! I never wanted to move back to Utah! I loved where we were, and I felt that my kids were thriving. But there was an undeniable feeling, that came over me when we entered the Brigham City area, that we were supposed to be in Utah. Mike had been having the same feelings since his last business trip to SLC (which was the only the week before we left on our trip).

After we got back from our vacation, Mike had to go to Madison, WI, for a meeting, and then things started falling into place for us to move. Even though, initially, it was going to be a move to Arizona, things were heading towards a move out west. By the middle of July, it was determined that we were moving to Utah. Then it was a mad rush trying to get the house ready to put on the market, finding a house in Utah, and then moving out here. Thankfully, the kids only missed out on a couple of days of school in Utah. They had already started school in MS, since we weren't sure exactly when we would be moving to Utah.

We are loving the Eagle Mountain area! Our ward is amazing, and the kids are transitioning well to their new schools (with only one exception-and I'm going to attribute that to being a young teenager!). The only thing that we are really trying to get used to is that we can't just make a quick trip to Wal-mart or to the convenience store!!

I am going to try to be more diligent with updating my blog. I had forgotten how much fun it is to do these "journal" entries!! Pictures will also be included, showing what we've done over the past year!Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02682945109291353425noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1153046275000475220.post-61912977800036494692009-12-24T00:00:00.001-06:002009-12-24T00:00:01.537-06:00is home, unpacked, load in washer, load in dishwasher, and now getting Joseph ready for bed. We are out for Thanksgiving break!! Tosha and Zac are heading to Chicago tomorrow to march in the McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade! It will be televised on WGN starting at 8:30am Central time. We are not sure where they are in the parade yet, but look for an awesome looking band wearing gold and black uniforms!

Joseph is growing leaps and bounds! He is outgrowing his 12 month sized clothes, and he is learning to pull himself to a standing position! Joseph can scoot across the floor (reverse is his favorite gear right now!)! The more active that he is, the happier he is! Joseph and I like to get out of the house and do things! Right now I have been taking him to the "Y", and he is breaking the hearts of the nursery ladies there! This is the first time that I have not worked after having a baby and I'm not used to this! None of my friends are phone talkers, so I am going without adult conversation a lot of times!

Mike was released as Bishop in October. That has definitely been a new exprerience around here! Having Mike sit with me during Sacrament meeting is still odd! It had been almost 7 years since that had happened on a regular basis! With his release, work has become a bit more demanding. He is on the road a lot more! It's funny how that happened! I always knew that was one of the blessings of Mike serving as Bishop, but now I'm seeing it first hand!
He weighs in at 14lbs 10oz and is 23 1/2 inches long. He is definitely a chunk now!!! He is eating cereal and loving it!! Now that we are putting him on his tummy to sleep, he is sleeping so much better (me too!!)! Joseph smiles almost constantly and loves to "talk" to us and the ceiling fan! He blends in well with this family!!

We are enjoying our summer break. We are just wishing it was a lot cooler!! This has been a miserable summer. We went 2 months without any rain, and temperatures in the 100's! Trying to convince people to stay in Mississippi (you know who you are!!) has been very difficult to do with these unusual temperatures!!!

Laundry is loudly calling my name - UGH!!!! Hope all is well with you!Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02682945109291353425noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1153046275000475220.post-39783402957729573782009-06-23T09:36:00.005-05:002009-06-23T10:55:35.075-05:00One of the Most Peaceful Places on Earth...I had a wonderful opportunity to go to the Northeast a couple of weeks ago. It was just Joseph and I with Debi and her four children. We took two days to drive to New Jersey, and spent several days with Debi's sister and family. Where we were staying was about an hour away from NYC. So, Debi was sweet enough to take me to go see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and downtown NYC! Joseph, Gabrielle (Debi's youngest daughter), Debi's mom, Debi, and I went to go see the Statue of Liberty. The weather was gray and dreary, but the rain held out while we were visiting "Lady Liberty". It was an amazing sight. To think of what the immigrants must have felt when they saw her standing so majestically, and to realize that there lives were going to be changing (hopefully for the better). Ellis Island was also very thought provoking. NYC was just crazy!! And we went on a Sunday! It was so neat to see this big, bustling city. We had all of the kids with us on this trip, and we just drove through parts of downtown. I was glad that we were able to see Ground Zero.

After we were in NJ, we went to central New York where Debi and her family lived for four years. It is a gorgeous area. Small town, but a lot to see and do. Debi, Gabrielle, Joseph and I went to Palmyra to see church sites. The Sacred Grove has to be one of the most peaceful places on the Earth - without entering into a temple. I could go visit there daily! I loved seeing the Joseph Smith home(s), and then we went and saw where the first editions of The Book of Mormon were published. The next day we went to Fayette where The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized. The Fayette church building is wonderful, and I was jealous of the Hicks for having the chance to go to church in such an amazing building! Not to mention that the Peter Whitmer home is just a few hundred yards away from their building! I can't wait until my whole family can take this amazing trip to see some of the church history sites.

Joseph is getting soooo big! He is smiling all of the time, talking/cooing, and has started eating rice cereal. Yes, it might be a little early (according to the new guidelines), but he is still getting up three times at night to eat! I need sleep!!!! It hasn't helped yet, but he does enjoy eating the cereal! He took to eating from a spoon very naturally! I was amazed! We go in for his four month appointment the beginning of July, so we will see how big he has officially become! He no longer looks like he was a preemie!

Everybody else is doing well. Tosha is done with Girls Camp. Zac goes to Scout Camp in a couple of weeks and they both have Youth Conference this weekend. Typing and holding a baby is a challenge! Especially since Joseph is getting so much more active. He does not like to sit still anymore. His head is bobbing, or his arms are flailing about, or he is trying to push himself up to a standing position on my lap. But he loves to be held - and I love holding him!!

Nothing much new going on around here. Summer has started at the Lyon home. My kids have yet to tell me that they are bored, but I am a mean mom that will give them some housework to do if they dare to utter those words!! Tosha is packing the final stuff for girls camp - at least we hope this is the final stuff. We are enjoying the Wii Fit that we bought a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately it can get so hot and humid here, that going outside a lot to exercise, is very hard to do. The Wii Fit can definitely give you a work out! I don't like the scale part - but other than that, it is a lot of fun!

Mike is out of town again. His company is requiring a lot more traveling for their "outside" people. I miss him while he is gone, but I have learned that this is part of the job. I have also learned to appreciate the time when he is home and not out of town for work or gone for a church meeting (which can be multiple times in a week!). Heavenly Father made me strong and stubborn for a reason! :)

I am attaching a couple of pictures from our Memorial Day drive. Our last child in elementary school for 5 years!! Katie is so glad to be finished at Highland Bluff. She loved her old school and her teachers, and she has really struggled at Highland Bluff. The awards ceremony today lasted for over an hour and a half!! This was just for 5th grade! No teachers singing and dancing either. =(

At any rate, Katie was one of the students awarded with the "President's Award for Educational Excellence" and the "Presidential Fitness Award"! Katie has always been our most athletic child, so I am really glad that she was recognized for this. The Educational Excellence award is a great honor as well!

We would have pictures for this day, but for some reason, our camera has never worked well in the school cafeterias!!

Tosha and Zac are also doing well in school. Tosha was recognized at her awards ceremony for participating on the academic team, which won first place in the Rankin County competition. Tosha and Zac were both exempt from their final exams (except Zac has to take the Algebra exam - he had a tough teacher this year that did not like to explain things very well.).

We are so pleased with how well our children are succeeding in school.
